Do you know the Catalan tradition of Sant Jordi?

If this weekend you will be in Barcelona, Costa Dorada or Costa Brava, you can discover the wonderful Catalan tradition of Sant Jordi, which is celebrated every April 23rd.

This celebration is the favorite of the Catalans, as the streets of the cities are flooded with beautiful roses and stalls selling books, to celebrate this legend that is characterized by culture and love: .

Legend has it that several centuries ago, in a small village in the province of Tarragona, a ferocious dragon that could poison the air and even murder with its breath, constantly terrorized the inhabitants of the area. The residents of that town, who were tremendously frightened and tired of the dragon’s devastation, decided to try to appease it by feeding it one person per day, a person to be chosen at random.

Several days later, bad luck befell the princess. As the princess was leaving her house and heading towards her unfortunate fate with the dragon, a noble knight named Sant Jordi, dressed in shining armor and riding a white horse, arrived to save the princess.

Sant Jordi raised his sword and pierced the dragon, finally freeing the princess and the rest of the inhabitants. From the dragon’s blood, a rose bush grew with the reddest roses ever seen. Sant Jordi, victorious, chose a beautiful rose and gave it to the princess.

This legend has been a great inspiration to architects, singers and other artists. Among them, Antoni Gaudí stands out with his masterpiece Casa Batlló, in Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona, which shows elements of this legend such as Sant Jordi’s sword, the dragon and the princess’ balcony. In addition, during this special day of Sant Jordi, Casa Batlló has been dressed repeatedly over the years, with endless grandiose roses.
