Good food helps us to socialise, to converse and to activate our senses. Increasingly, we travel to taste new flavours, which transport us and show us everything that we cannot appreciate with our eyes alone. The Mediterranean is one of the favourite places for its gastronomy, which also includes its wine and olive oil culture.

Wine tourism and olive oil tourism: what are these two concepts?

These two long concepts are taking root in our vocabulary to refer to various aspects of our culinary culture. First, we must consider the meaning of both words separately.

On the one hand, wine tourism refers to all those tourist experiences that seek to link gastronomy with wine, while the environment also acquires special relevance.

What would a tasting of a high-quality culinary product be without a glass of wine or cava? This question has managed to encourage the creation of some of the most original initiatives so that food lovers can discover the origin of these products, such as, for example, discovering the vineyards of the winery in question.

More and more companies are joining this trend, as the demand from this public is growing exponentially. Getting to know the history of the wineries, strolling through their fields while learning about the entire production process, and taste the final product, is a luxury that is now within your reach.

On the other hand, olive oil tourism, which is even less well known, refers to olive oil, also known as liquid gold, a highly prized product in Catalonia that adds value to the Mediterranean diet.

In this case, like wine tourism, olive oil tourism combines olive oil tasting with a unique experience, such as getting to know the olive groves or the production process that brings it to our table.

Appellations of origin in Barcelona area

Catalonia has up to 12 wine appellations of origin. The closest to Barcelona region are DO Penedès, DO Pla de Bages, near Montserrat mountain, and DO Alella, to the north of Barcelona; as well as DO Catalonia and Cava, which are present in many parts of the autonomous community.

As for the protected appellations of origin (P.D.O.) for olive oil, Catalonia has a total of five: Siurana, Les Garrigues, Terra Alta, Baix-Ebre and L’Empordà.

This large number of appellations of origin highlights the excellent quality and originality of Catalonia’s local products, a fact that places the Catalan territory in a privileged position, well worth visiting.
