Spending a few days overlooking the sea, accompanied by family or friends, is one of the most appealing plans for spending the summer. But beyond the bathing season, the Catalan coast offers a magnificent range of landscapes and nature that can be enjoyed all year round, thanks to the Mediterranean climate and the good temperatures in the territory.

One of the areas par excellence of the Catalan coast, which always attracts millions of visitors, is Costa Brava, an area that maintains its wild and unexplored essence, and which allows you to discover new, unknown corners every time you visit.

Vila Vella, in Tossa de Mar

The first place that deserves a space in this publication is Vila Vella, in Tossa de Mar. It is a fortification that was built during the 12th and 14th centuries and which, since 1931, has been considered a National Historic-Artistic Monument. This large enclosure, which is almost entirely preserved, surrounds the medieval buildings that existed at the time, connected by narrow alleyways through which you can stroll and imagine what life was like for the people who lived there during the Middle Ages.

Along this wall, four towers and three more cylindrical towers stand out, which are Torre d’en Joanàs, Torre de las Horas and Torre d’es Codolar. Within this medieval area, there was also a castle, which was demolished to build the current lighthouse.

During your stay in Tossa de Mar, don’t miss the old church of Sant Vicenç, from the 15th century, as well as Torre dels Moros, which was used to watch out for pirates arriving from North Africa and to warn the population.

Greek and Roman ruins, in Empúries

Another must-see site is the ruins of Empúries, a 40-hectare archaeological site located about 2 kilometres from L’Escala and 500 metres from Sant Martí d’Empúries

most beautiful spots Costa Brava

Its name, Empúries, comes from the Greek word ‘Emporion’, which means commercial centre. This settlement was a strategic trading point for Greeks, firstly from the 6th century BC, and then for Romans from the 3rd century BC onwards.

During your visit, you will be able to see the public square; the Asclepius and Serapis enclosures, which consisted of the installations where all kinds of fish preserves and sauces were made; the Forum; the shops and taverns; as well as the monographic museum of the Empúries excavations, where you will find the statue of Asclepius, God of medicine.

The most beautiful beaches and coves

If you visit Costa Brava, its most beautiful places par excellence are its beaches and coves, which will not leave you indifferent. Some of them are Cala Estreta, located 8 kilometres from Palamós, which has an old fishermen’s hut. It is a small, completely natural cove, just 100 metres long, which is divided in two by a rocky outcrop, known as La Roja.

In Baix Empordà region, in the town of Begur, you will find Cala de la Illa Roja, presided over by a large reddish rock, with an extension of about 180 metres. During your visit to this town, you can take the opportunity to explore the area around Cap de Begur, where you can also enjoy Cala d’Aiguafreda, Cala de Sa Tuna and Cala de Sa Riera, three magnificent natural spaces hidden among the cliffs.

In the municipality of Cadaqués you can discover incredible beaches and coves of great scenic beauty, such as Cala Portaló, Cala Cullaró, Platja de S’Arenella, Cala Fredosa and Platja Es Sortell, among many others.

Medes Islands

Finally, we present the archipelago of Medes Islands, with an area of some 22 hectares of land and 511 hectares of sea, and made up of 7 islets: Meda Gran, the largest, where you will find Far de la Meda; Meda Petita; Carrall Bernat; as well as Tascons Grossos and Tascons Petits, Medellot and Ferranelles.

This natural area has the most important flora and fauna reserve in the western Mediterranean, thanks to its rich seabed. It is also worth mentioning that these islands are considered part of Parc Natural del Montgrí, de les Illes Medes i del Baix Ter.

You can also go on numerous marine routes and itineraries to discover, first-hand, the magnificent underwater world hidden beneath this archipelago. On the surface, you can also get to know the bird species that are most present in this area, such as the yellow-legged gull, among many others.
