5 Must-See Exhibitions in Barcelona

Barcelona, a city in constant cultural ferment, reaffirms its position every autumn as one of Europe’s richest artistic destinations. With the arrival of this season, museums and art centres offer numerous temporary exhibitions designed to stimulate debate, revisit historical figures and present new trends.

This period is ideal for visitors: pleasant temperatures allow you to explore the museum circuit at a leisurely pace, taking advantage of the opportunity to immerse yourself in exhibitions that will be available for a limited time only. The main venues, such as the Museu Tàpies, the Fundació Joan Miró and the CCCB, compete to attract the public with themes that explore photography, design, history and social criticism.

World Press Photo 2025

An unmissable event in Barcelona’s cultural autumn calendar is World Press Photo 2025, which celebrates its 21st edition at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB). This prestigious exhibition presents a selection of photographs and multimedia productions that have won the world’s most renowned photojournalism competition, offering a rigorous graphic testimony of global current affairs.

World Press Photo is committed to a territorial competition model that divides the world into six regions, ensuring a diverse representation of authors and stories. The exhibition is organised into four main categories —Single Pictures, Photo Stories, Long-Term Projects and Open Format— covering a wide range of approaches and techniques.

A special reason not to miss this edition is the presence of Spanish talent. Photographers such as Samuel Nacar and Luis Tato have been recognised in the regional categories, highlighting the quality of national photojournalism on the international scene.

This exhibition, which will be open from 6 November to 14 December, is an invitation to reflect deeply on the issues that shape our reality, with the added benefit of being able to complement your visit with guides that analyse the context of each work.

5 Must-See Exhibitions in Barcelona

50th Anniversary of the Joan Miró Foundation

The Joan Miró Foundation is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an ambitious programme that brings you the exhibition ‘Miró i els Estats Units’ (Miró and the United States), which can be visited until 22 February 2026. This exhibition offers a new interpretation of the Catalan artist’s career, shifting the traditional European focus and placing the United States at the centre of his work’s evolution.

The exhibition explores Miró’s intense relationship with the American art scene, especially in New York, through his seven trips between 1947 and 1968. The exhibition brings together around 160 works by Miró himself, alongside pieces by American artists who admired his work and were inspired by his poetic abstraction, such as Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Mark Rothko and Louise Bourgeois.

Cristina Iglesias: Passages

La Pedrera, also known as Casa Milà, is hosting one of the most powerful contemporary art events of the autumn: ‘Cristina Iglesias. Passages’, available until 25 January 2026. This monographic exhibition offers an immersive journey through nearly forty works by the influential Spanish sculptor, created from 2002 to the present day. The exhibition is much more than a simple display; it is a sensory choreography where Iglesias’ work interacts with the fluid and organic architecture of Antoni Gaudí.

Iglesias, known for her ability to fuse art, nature and space, presents sculptural volumes that visitors must walk through and feel. Through corridors of organic textures, materials such as metal and stone are transformed into visual and tactile echoes, inviting contemplation

Animals Invisibles, at the Museu de Ciències Naturals

The Museu de Ciències Naturals in Barcelona presents a fascinating invitation to reflection with the exhibition ‘Animals Invisibles: mite, vida, extincció, desextincció’ (Invisible Animals: myth, life, extinction, de-extinction). The exhibition covers a wide spectrum of creatures: those that have become extinct; those that only exist in the collective imagination and myths, such as dragons; and finally, those that are alive but difficult to see, such as the giant squid.

Leonardo versus Michelangelo

Finally, for a more playful and technological experience, IDEAL Barcelona is hosting ‘LEONARDO VERSUS MICHELANGELO’. This large-format production is an immersive challenge that uses 360º virtual reality and metaverse in more than 2,000 m² to pit the two giants of the Renaissance against each other, allowing visitors to vote for their favourite in a show suitable for all audiences.

With this magnificent range of offerings, autumn in Barcelona is the perfect season to immerse yourself in the city’s avant-garde and cultural tradition.
